Registering the drive

The WD SmartWare™ software uses your computer's Internet connection to register the drive. Registering the drive provides free technical support during the warranty period and keeps you up to date on the latest WD products.

To register the drive:

1. Make sure that your computer is connected to the Internet.
2. Type your first name in the First name box.
3. Type your last name in the Last name box.
4. Type your e-mail address in the E-mail address box.
5. Select your language in the Preferred language box.
6. Select or clear the Yes, I want to receive communication... check box to specify whether or not you want to receive e-mail notifications about software updates, product enhancements, and price discount opportunities.
7. Click Register Drive.

After registering the drive:

1. Click the other buttons to password protect and name your drive:
   • Security
   • Label, if your My Book or My Passport drive has a customizable label
2. After password protecting and naming your drive, depending on the version of the WD SmartWare software you installed, click either:
   • Continue, if you installed the full version of the WD SmartWare software, to close the Drive Settings dialog and display the WD SmartWare Home screen.
   • Exit, if you installed the drive management version of the WD SmartWare software, to close the Drive Settings dialog.

     In this case, opening the WD SmartWare software displays the drive management Home screen with a Settings tab for performing the rest of the drive management functions.
